Report of the opening of the Bowls Pavilion 1931. It's probable that the opening of a bowls pavilion in 1931 was not of general   interest, but the endearing names of folk in attendance at that time was a custom rarely repeated today and of worthy note. Names such as Dai - all night, Dan the tall poet, Tomos the fat poet, Shon, the high street literate, Len the swan,Dai the milkman, Shams the baker and the big and small Cardi's. Also present were singers, musicians and councillors. A high society person at the ceremony was Sir Harry George.

From the Aberdare Leader report of about 700 words one might conclude that in 1931 only a few people had watches because the signal to "open the bowls gate" and punctuality was the town hooter which sounded a long wailing note at one o'clock. This was followed at the scene with the announcement (but in the Welsh language) - thus :Now then boys, here I am opening the gate" - and so the event continued towards the pavilion. The report was the part time historian namely, Mr John D 'Pen Dar.

Some observations:-

(a) It is surprising that the name of a preacher is not mentioned in the report, but it is a record of Aberdares' more cultural times.

(b) Although the opening event at the Pavilion took place on a Wednesday, it is known that leisure facilities such as bowls, swings and boats were closed on Sundays, but a brass band might have played on the island on the Sabbath day

Aberdare Bowls Club just won the Rhondda Bowling League Division 2. Played 9 won 9. Congratulations to all the players.
